Within five minutes of leaving the customs area in the Budapest airport, my very pregnant cousin Nori greeted me with open arms. It was good to see her again after one year.
She is about 18 weeks pregnant and expecting a boy, news which makes her husband Zsolt very happy. (Zsolt and Nori have competing bellies!) We stopped at a local supermarket where for $22, we bought chicken breasts and salad stuff for dinner and headed to their chalet like home in the northern Budapest suburbs.
Several cats, including two small kittens, greeted us, and then proceeded to follow us to the swimming pool where we both took a much-needed dip in very cold water. So much for the vaunted hot thermal baths that Hungarians love!
The night cooled off and we enjoyed looking out over their balcony toward the lights of suburban Dunakeszi, talking about family history. Zsolt is saving up some of his family stories for me on Saturday when we drive two hours' south to meet some more cousins.
We’re making plans to head to the big market in Budapest tomorrow as well as to town hall to thank Ms. Varga, a record clerk, for reuniting our family.
I presented Nori and Zsolt witha baby album and some Tar Heel baby clothes and some other small gifts. We’re off to a good start!
